THE ILLUSTRATED HITCH-HIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY

The Illustrated Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy, published by BCA in arrangement with George Weidenfeld and Nicholson Ltd (1994). Starring John Lermit as Arthur Dent, Tom Finnis as Ford Prefect, Francis Johnson as Zaphod Beeblebrox, Tali as Trillian, Janos Kuruz as Slartibartfast. Guest-starring Douglas Adams and Ed Victor as the cops.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I spotted this one; way up on the top of a shelf in a Cancer Research charity shop, having to squint at the scribbled price sticker: £3 or £30? Turns out it was £3 (!) I've been on the lookout for the book since I saw it announced in an old magazine I had a subscription to in the 1990s (Sci Fi & Fantasy Models, I think it was called) It's been on my to-scan list for ages, but in the end had to settle for photographs - it's too big to fit in the scanner for starters, and too much work to scan and stitch up to eight parts an image (also nearly impossible for illustrations printed across the spine).

Final question: why-oh-why couldn't the 2005 abortion of an adaptation look like this?

THE ILLUSTRATED HITCH-HIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY (THE TOWEL)

Wrap it around you on the cold moons of Joblan Beta.

Lie on it on the brilliant marble sand beaches of Satraginus V.

Sleep beneath it under the stars on the desert world of Kekrafoon.

Wrap around the head to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal.
